Home Occupations

A variety of low-key business activities, which do not cause any disturbance to neighbours, may be operated from home. The Council has a Town Planning Scheme Policy relating to Home Occupations. This should be studied before an application is made for a Home Occupation. Approval is required before a Home Occupation may commence. Any of the following conditions of approval may be imposed by Council:

  • Permission is only granted to the applicant to conduct a home occupation at the premises;
  • The applicant shall be permanently residing at the premises while they are being used for home occupation purposes.
  • No more than two persons, who are normally resident at the premises maybe employed by the Home Occupation.
  • The Home Occupation shall be conducted in such a manner that it will be unobtrusive and will not prejudicially affect the amenity of the neighbourhood.
  • No advertisement other than a sign up to 0.2m2 depicting the type of home occupation and telephone numbers will be permitted at the premises.
  • The Home Occupation shall not give rise to vehicular traffic beyond which is normal to the neighbourhood or to a requirement for parking other than that which can normally be expected at the premises. No parking on the street or road verge will be permitted.
  • Goods shall not be sold at the premises.
  • The storage of pesticides, swimming pool chemicals, explosives or dangerous toxic materials is not authorised under this approval.
  • The Council reserves the right to inspect the premises and, if any of the above conditions are not being complied with to its satisfaction, to rescind its approval and require the immediate discontinuance of the Home Occupation.

Applications may be made on the appropriate form (available at Council Offices) and must be accompanied by the appropriate fees, a covering letter explaining the activities and nature of the Home Occupation. The Council may consult neighbours if they have not signed the application form.
