The Shire of Northam has a total of 730 km of constructed roads comprised of 427 km of bitumen and 303 km or gravel or formed roads. Annual construction and maintenance programs are generally determined from the five year plan which has been developed with the assistance of the 'ROMAN' asset management software. Emergent works are dealt with on as as required basis. Construction works are prioritised according to usage and development need according to Council policy and financial constraints. The five year works program is reviewed and updated yearly in March, prior to budget deliberations.

Works are predominantly undertaken on a day labour basis with contractors unless used for particular projects and components of jobs.
