Stargazing at Bakers Hill

Discover the "Morning Star" dance on Ballardong Country with Northam Nyoongar Ballardong storyteller, Daniel Garlett and the Dadajaal Dance Company. Hear Aboriginal cultural stories of the night sky followed by a "Beginner's Guide to Astronomy" and a closer look through telescopes as we travel back in time!
6pm-8.30pm, Tuesday 31st August 2021 Bakers Hill Recreation Centre St George Street, Bakers Hill
$10 adults, children free. Includes winter warmer soup, roll and hot cuppa from the Bakers Hill Progress & Recreation Association. BYO chairs, rugs, torches, warm clothes. Bookings: Please book by 27th August by emailing [email protected] and pay on the night (cash only). This event will go ahead rain, hail or shine. If it's cloudy, there will be some great fun alternative presentations, activities and games for children. This event was made possible with funding from the Shire of Northam. It is part of the Astrotourism Towns Project promoting Northam as a destination for stargazing and astrophotography.
- 6pm: Arrive at Bakers Hill Rec Centre (on St George Street), pay for their $10 ticket (kids free) and receive your light dinner of soup (vegetarian soup is available) + roll + hot cuppa (fundraising for and courtesy of Bakers Hill Progress & Recreation Association).
- 6.15pm-6.30pm: Everyone is seated inside the Centre for Welcome to Country + ‘Morning Star’ dance performance + ‘Introduction to Aboriginal Astronomy’ presentation by Daniel Garlett and dancers. Daniel is a born and bred Northam Nyoongar Ballardong man with a wealth of experience and knowledge of Aboriginal astronomy and culture which he is looking forward to sharing with us.
- 6.30pm-6.45pm: Also inside the Centre will be a brief ‘Beginner’s Guide to Astronomy’ presentation by Riley Johnston from Astrotourism WA.
- 7pm-8.30pm: Everyone to make their way outside to the Oval (located on the same premises as the Centre). We have chosen the Oval for minimal light pollution.
- Daniel, Riley and Astrotourism WA volunteers are available throughout the evening to continue speaking about the night sky stories + provide a green laser pointer tour as people take turns at the telescopes.
