2019 Local Government Elections Just Around the Corner

Every two years the Shire of Northam holds its Council Elections. If you are passionate about the future direction of the Shire, this election provides an opportunity for you to stand for Council. The Local Government Elections have been scheduled for 19 October 2019.

The Role of an Elected Member is outlined in the Local Government Act 1995, which includes;

  1. represents the interests of electors, ratepayers and residents of the district; and
  2. provides leadership and guidance to the community in the district; and
  3. facilitates communication between the community and the council; and
  4. participates in the local government’s decision-making processes at council and committee meetings; and
  5. performs such other functions as are given to a councillor by this Act or any other written law.

Shire President Chris Antonio said “The Shire of Northam is a fantastic place. If you want a say in our Shire’s positive future, the upcoming election is your chance. This is by seeking to be elected as a Councillor. Five of our ten council positions are open for nomination.”

There are currently five (5) positions coming available at the election:

1 East Ward currently occupied by Cr Antonio;

2 Town Ward currently occupied by Cr’s Rob Tinetti and John Proud;

1 central Ward currently occupied by Cr Julie Williams; and

1 West Ward currently occupied by Cr Chris Davidson

To be eligible to stand as a candidate you will need the following:

  1. You must be over 18
  2. You must be registered as a voter in the Shire of Northam

Prior to nominating, an elector must have completed the online Local Government Candidate Induction course which is available on the Department of Local Government’s official website. The Returning Officer will provide candidates with a USB containing relevant forms and information. A candidate may obtain a free copy of the owners and occupiers roll and the residents roll for the electorate (ward or district) for which they nominate, from the Returning Officer.
