Northam is set to enter a new era of fast broadband with the official switch on of the nbn™ network in the region.

Just eight months after nbn trucks first rolled in to town, 3700 local homes and businesses can now experience the benefits of fast and reliable broadband through the nbn™ network.

They join more than 500 premises on the outskirts of the township which have been able to take advantage of nbn’s fixed wireless technology since 2016. Many premises in the wider surroundings are eligible to connect to the nbn™ network through the Sky Muster™ satellite service which has been available from retailers to regional and remote Australians since April last year.

The nbn spokesperson for WA, Ebony Aitken said:

This is exciting news for Northam as it means that homes and businesses are now able to connect to services over the nbn™ network through their preferred phone or internet provider.”

The community will join more than 5.6 million other premises across Australia that are currently able to enjoy the benefits of the nbn™ network, with more than 590,000 of those in WA.

Access to fast broadband is designed to provide a range of benefits such as improved opportunities to work from home, better access to online education tools and more options for on-demand entertainment.

Businesses will be able to improve their productivity through cloud based sharing with staff and customers as well as have increased opportunities to access new markets through e-commerce.

It’s vital that people understand that switching to the nbn™ network is not automatic and they need to contact their preferred provider to place an order for their new internet and phone services.”

Shire of Northam Chief Executive Officer, Jason Whiteaker said the nbn roll out is important for Northam:

The roll out of the nbn is an important part of the development of the Northam. In providing faster internet speeds it will provide opportunities for residents as well as local and potential businesses.”

“Having access to fast internet connections is critical for the economic development of rural and regional communities, now we have them in the Shire of Northam it provides another opportunity”.

People can find out whether they are eligible to connect by using the Check Your Address function at www.nbnco.com.au/switch.
