Volunteers Vegetate the River

Earlier this month, students from Mr Andrew Valance’s Northam Senior High School Class joined together with volunteers from the Avon Valley Environmental Society to vegetate the new island that has been created by the summer floods just downstream of the Flour Mill.

Peter Weatherly of the Environmental Society said the work will stabilise the island, create habitat and biodiversity, and improve the visual amenity of the area.  It was also an enjoyable exercise for the students as well as a learning experience.

The latest floods have altered the hydrology of the town pool due to the huge amounts of silt that were shifted during the event.  Since the town pool is wider than the upstream section the water tends to slow down, lose some of its energy and therefore allow the heavier sand particles to fall and re-sculpture the bottom of the pool Mr Weatherly said.

The exercise was an excellent example of community cooperation with the seedlings being supplied free by Greening Australia and the volunteer labour by the school and the society.  The area will be carefully monitored and photographed over time to demonstrate the changes.
