Protecting Your Home against Burglary

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 September 2017 at 11:35:59 AM

Are you aware one of Australia’s most common crimes is Home burglary? Thieves target items like televisions and stereos, as well as credit cards, cash, outdoor furniture, tools and computer equipment because they can easily be resold or traded.

Going away these school holidays? Some easy tips to protect your home are listed below:

  • Lock up your home
  • Install motion-activated lighting to keep track of what is happening outside at night.
  • Avoid advertising your holiday plans on social media.
  • After purchasing new electrical goods ensure that their packaging is not left visible
  • Lock up tools, gardening equipment and ladders, as these can be used to gain access to your home.
  • Make sure your house looks occupied by leaving lights on at night if you are out or asking a trusted friend of family member to occasionally drop by to check on your property while you are away.
  • Cut back trees and shrubs to remove potential hiding places.
  • Organise for Australia Post to hold your mail while you are away, you can easily manage the mail holding service through the Australia Post website.
  • Property marking pens are available from the Wundowie and Northam Libraries for community members to borrow.

The Shire of Northam encourages residents to join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group. Neighbourhood Watch is simply neighbours getting to know neighbours, looking out for each other and reporting suspicious activity to Police.  That is the smallest investment we ask of anyone that lives in our community.
