Shire of Northam Workplace Health and Safety

Workplace Health and Safety has been a major focus at the Shire of Northam in recent years which has resulted in a significant reduction in work place injuries and absenteeism. In 2013 with the arrival of the new CEO an OSH audit was undertaken which produced a disappointing 23% result, however these findings were used as the basis of an action plan which resulted in a highly improved score of 67% in 2016. The Shire is continuing to drive continuous improvements throughout the organisation in the hope that Silver status will be attained at the next audit when they are next assessed.

As part of this improvement process staff were trained and encouraged to put into practice a set of newly implemented safety procedures, and in line with the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 it was ensured that all Shire of Northam work areas provide adequate first aid services and facilities to both the staff and the general public. As part of the Shire’s continuous improvement St John’s Ambulance were invited to conduct safety assessments in all of the Shire work areas whereby first aid training, equipment, facilities and procedural systems were assessed and rated in line with legislative requirements.

Every Shire of Northam work area scored in excess of 94% resulting in accreditation for the Administration Building, Depots, Libraries, Pools, Recreation Centre, Visitor Centre and Killara. HR Coordinator Bev Jones commented It has been a great team effort in ensuring that all of our areas are fully compliant and I would encourage any work place or public service area to apply for recognition. During the audit lots of valuable information and advice was provided which we have gratefully taken on board.

Acting CEO Chadd Hunt said The Shire of Northam is the first regional Local Government  in WA to receive this significant recognition and hopefully this will encourage other work places to get on board in ensuring that they are fully prepared for a first aid emergency. It is a credit to our all our staff and in particular our HR Department and staff that are committed to improving the work safety for both themselves and their workmates. In recent years we have undertaken huge improvements in our Safety procedures and protocols and the recognition from St Johns Ambulance is another sign of our continuous improvement in this area.
