Proposed Avon Logistics Hub moves step closer to reality

The Shire of Northam (Council) has agreed to terms for the sale of Lot 881 Yilgarn Avenue to Procon Developments PTY LTD for the development of a significant regional freight and logistics hub in the Shire of Northam.

The decision by Council, comes after months of negotiations and assessments as to the feasibility of the proposal, which confirms that the proposed logistics hub site is ideally located. The agreement signifies an important step in seeing this potential development become a reality and continues the strong confidence being shown in the Shire of Northam by the private sector.

Procon Developments Director, Mr Leon Key, said this development was a significant opportunity and one which his Company was excited about.

Our feasibility assessment indicates that the Avon logistics hub has significant potential. It highlights that due to its location, an opportunity will be presented for freight companies to not only significantly reduce their final mile transport costs, but also increase their speed to market by between 24-48 hours

Having now agreed to terms with the Shire of Northam, we will be submitting our development application and finalising tenancy within the hub. We are hoping to have the development operational within the next 12-24 months

Procon have established a website with further information at www.avonlogisticshub.com.au.

In addition to the proposed logistics hub, Procon have commenced the adjacent construction of a significant truck stop/road house, which will provide first class amenities, fuel, food and accommodation.

The Avon Logistics Hub could represent the latest in a number of significant developments which have occurred in the Shire of Northam over the past twelve months, with a new shopping centre being opened, a major refurbishment of the existing shopping centre being completed, construction underway for a 250 site lifestyle village, redevelopment of an historic hotel by DOME Coffee in progress and a $45m dollar expansion of the Northam Hospital to name a few. In addition to these the Shire of Northam has recently completed its $6.0m Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge, whilst construction is soon to commence on a $1.5m youth and family space and construction of an $8.0m regional aquatic facility is currently out for tender.

Shire of Northam Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jason Whiteaker, said the proposed hub and truck stop were great opportunities for Northam and the region.

“The Shire of Northam is a vibrant community with significant development and opportunities being presented. The proposed Avon logistics hub not only adds to this list, it importantly brings a potential opportunity for significant employment generation”.

Employment is a critical element for the region, which can leverage recent federal, state and local government investments in education, health and amenity, into significant population growth, which is what we are aiming for”.

The Shire of Northam is now committed to working with Procon Developments to progress through the Development Application process, which will include a period of public consultation.
