Local Community support the focus of the 2020/21 Annual Budget

The Shire of Northam 2020/21 Annual Budget has made provision for $7.1m towards assisting the Shire of Northam community navigate its way through the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The $7.1m provision was part of the Council endorsed Covid-19 Response Strategy, which details Council’s response to the pandemic and is available at www.northam.wa.gov.au. The $7.1m package is made up of three key elements; economic support $5.5m, community support $600,000, and an economic stimulus initiate of $1,000,000.

Shire of Northam Shire President, Cr Chris Antonio, said this year’s budget process had a very different approach given the unique and challenging circumstances facing the Shire.

“We are certainly in unchartered waters and a significant amount of time and energy has gone into developing a budget which Council believes will provide as much support to our local community as possible”

“A combination of initiatives and projects focusing around economic support, community support and economic stimulus has been developed in order - to not only support our community, but with the clear aim to come out the other side of this pandemic an even stronger and more vibrant community” Cr Antonio said

The package details include a combination of rate relief (Nil rate increase, no interest charged on overdue rates until at least February 1, 2021), fee relief (sporting groups will not be charged any ground rent in 2020/21), local business grants, sporting club grants, as well as brining forward a range of projects and initiatives to support local businesses.
