  • Microchipping is compulsory for all dogs.

  • A $200 penalty applies for failing to register your dog (Dog Act 1976).

  • First-time registrations and ownership transfers require microchipping before registering.

  • All dangerous, restricted breed, or security dogs must be microchipped.

To register: Dog Registration

Identification

  • Dogs must wear their registration tag and an ID tag at all times.

  • ID tag must include your dog’s name and your current phone number.

Nuisance and Barking Dogs

Excessive barking can disturb neighbours and is considered a nuisance under the Dog Act 1976. If you're concerned about a barking dog, we recommend first chatting with the owner, they may not even be aware it’s happening. If the problem continues, contact the Shire for advice and support. We’re here to help both dog owners and neighbours find a solution

Number of Dogs

  • A maximum of two dogs per property is permitted.

  • You must apply for a special permit from the Shire before adding extra dogs.

Public Spaces

  • Dogs must be on a leash in public at all times.

  • Off-leash dogs may lead to on-the-spot fines.

Restricted Dog Breeds

Some dog breeds are classified as restricted under WA legislation due to their potential risk to public safety. This includes certain imported breeds and dogs declared dangerous. Owners of these dogs must follow strict requirements, including registration, muzzling in public, secure enclosures, and signage.

Wandering Dogs

If dogs without registration tags, ID tags or a microchip are found wandering they will be impounded. Wandering dogs will also be impounded if if the owner cannot be contacted or there is a record of previous offences.  Fines and fees for impounding and sustenance must be paid before a dog will be released from the pound, with unregistered dogs having to be registered before release. Dogs are only impounded for 72 hours, after which they will be made available for re-homing.
