To protect Western Australian agriculture the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development regulates harmful plants under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
Plants that are prevented entry into the State or have control or keeping requirements within the State are known as declared pests.

In accordance with the Shire of Northam Pest Plant Local Law 2019
Since 1 May 2013, local authorities have been able to prescribe problematic plant species as pest plants under section 193 of the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
This can be applied to any plant that, in the local authority’s opinion, is likely to adversely affect the environment of the district, the value of property in the district, or the health, comfort or convenience of the district’s inhabitants.
he Shire of Northam have declared three (3) Pest Plants in accordance with its Pest Plant Local Law 2019 .
