Northam Means Business

Celebrating Local Business Success Stories

The Shire of Northam is proud to celebrate the vision, innovation, and community spirit that drive growth across our region. Through "Northam Means Business" project, we showcase a series of inspiring local business stories, highlighting the people behind the success, their ideas, resilience, and contributions to our vibrant local economy.

A collection of short videos was produced to feature these businesses, offering authentic insights into their journeys and the impact they have within our local community.

This initiative not only recognises local achievements but also encourages collaboration, pride, and continued investment in the Shire of Northam’s future.

Northam Secondhand

A vibrant, eclectic retail store in the heart of Northam's CBD. Starting out as The Book Shed on Oliver Street, the business grew and evolved into the local icon and tourist attraction we know and love today. This evolution was achieved through sheer hard work, determination, and a genuine love of the area and of all things eclectic.

Spudshed Northam

A thriving and community‑centered fresh food market right in the centre of town. This beloved regional branch marked Spudshed’s expansion beyond the metropolitan area, which is a far cry from Spudshed's humble beginnings as a small farmers’ market in a shed on the Galati’s Baldivis farm. Spudshed has blossomed into a family‑run independent chain that brings affordable, farm‑fresh produce sourced from its own WA farms direct to the community.

The Northam store illustrates the brand’s expansion, providing new jobs, fresh food, and local pride, all built on grit, family values, and a genuine love for regional WA.

Zax & Co.

A charming cafe-meets-gift boutique located at 148 Fitzgerald Street. This beloved local spot emerged from owner Jo Hill’s aspiration to bring together quality retail and warm hospitality.

Through personal dedication and family involvement, she transformed a modest building into a thoughtfully styled space featuring beautiful rustic tones using brick and timber, with industrial shelving and soft-hued decor that invite a sense of warmth and welcoming. Here, visitors can enjoy freshly brewed coffee and homemade treats while meandering through ever-changing selections of homewares, fashion accents, beauty finds, children's items, books, and gourmet delicacies, all curated to surprise and delight.

With its friendly ambiance, this vibrant destination has quickly become a favourite in the Wheatbelt, offering a blend of community spirit and curated charm.

Evoke Living Homes

A proudly family-run modular home builder located in Northam. From their purpose-built facility on Old York Road, they design and assemble steel-framed homes tailored for rural WA, from sleek countryside cottages to robust, weather-ready family dwellings.

With over three decades of building experience backing them, they offer a truly bespoke process: from initial concept to final installation, every home reflects the client’s lifestyle, terrain, and budget. These cleverly engineered homes meet stringent energy-efficiency and bushfire safety standards, and they can be crafted to suit the client's needs exactly for each build. What sets them apart is their commitment to fast, reliable construction, with some homes completed in just a few months, and their hands-on support, including working with local authorities and trades to smooth every step of the journey.

Community investment is also tangible: through a recent expansion, they’ve bolstered capacity and now deliver more homes annually while creating jobs and apprenticeships in the Wheatbelt region.

Buckland Estate

Beautifully restored and developed in recent years by Russell Percival, Buckland Estate stands as a shining example of visionary entrepreneurship and regional revival.

Since taking ownership, Russell has poured years of passion, hard work, and strategic investment into transforming this historic 1836 homestead into one of Western Australia’s most sought-after event destinations. Set in the heart of the Shire of Northam, the location has been key to its success, offering sweeping countryside views, convenient access from Perth, and a rich sense of heritage that guests instantly connect with.

From luxury weddings and retreats to corporate functions and glamping getaways, Buckland Estate now thrives as a thriving business and regional tourism icon, blending timeless charm with modern comfort in one of WA’s most beautiful rural settings.

Linley Valley Pork

Western Australia’s largest vertically integrated pork producer and part of the Craig Mostyn Group, a family-owned enterprise with a legacy spanning over a century.
For more than 30 years, they have been dedicated to producing premium-quality pork sourced from their own farms and trusted partners.
Their large-scale processing operations are anchored in Wundowie, where a state-of-the-art facility employs approximately 470 individuals and delivers an annual output of 56 million kilograms of pork.
A recent capital investment of $25 million has enhanced their capabilities through the development of automated packaging, a modern boning room, and upgraded chilling infrastructure.
As one of the largest employers in the Wheatbelt, Linley Valley Pork maintain strong ties with the communities of Northam and the surrounding farming regions. Their commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in a respect for the land, driving their efforts to implement environmentally responsible practices that safeguard WA’s agricultural future for generations to come.
With abundant space for development and ideal positioning for transportation around the state, the Shire of Northam is the perfect location for production and distribution operations of any size.
