Unless specified in the Shire’s Town Planning Schemes, all residential areas with ‘R-Codes" shall be developed in accordance with the Residential Design Codes of Western Australia. The R-Codes applies to all residential development within Western Australia, providing a comprehensive basis for residential development. Planning approval is required for all residential development within the Shire of Northam that does not meet the Acceptable Development Criteria of the R-Codes.A separate application and issue of a Building Licence is also required for all residential development.
It’s important to note that the R-Codes don’t address the physical construction requirements or internal arrangements of buildings. These are dealt with by the Building Codes of Australia.
