The Shire of Northam Accelerates Towards a Zero-Emissions Future
We are thrilled to announce that the Shire of Northam has welcomed three new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) into our fleet, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future. This milestone has been made possible thanks to a grant from the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) and funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) through its Driving the Nation Program.

As part of this initiative, we committed to purchasing three BEVs two proudly bought from Northam Autos and one from Avon Valley Toyota strengthening our ties with local businesses while reducing our carbon footprint. This commitment forms part of our journey to achieve zero emissions by 2031.
This exciting step is also part of a groundbreaking state-wide project led by WALGA, which is supporting 21 Local Governments across WA to transition their fleets to electric vehicles. The project represents a $12.26 million investment, with $7.68 million contributed by participating Local Governments for the purchase of 129 BEVs, alongside $3.51 million from ARENA and $1 million from the WA State Government for charging infrastructure.
Through bulk procurement, knowledge sharing, and collaborative planning, the initiative will deliver cost-effective solutions and accelerate the installation of charging infrastructure particularly benefiting non-metropolitan Local Governments.
Reflecting on the announcement, Shire President Chris Antonio said:
“The Shire of Northam is proud to be part of this project and to be amongst leaders in the transition toward EVs, highlighting how all levels of Government can work well together.”
We are proud to play a key role in this transformative program and invite our community to join us in celebrating this milestone and our ongoing commitment to a cleaner, greener future for Northam.
