Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer

The quarantine area (QA) within metropolitan Perth has been extended as the spread of Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer continues.

Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) Euwallacea fornicatus is a beetle native to Southeast Asia. The beetle attacks a wide range of plants by tunnelling into trunks, stems and branches. Detection of PSHB is difficult as they are very small – about the size of a sesame seed.

While NOT detected in the Shire of Northam, here’s an Infographic that shows the restrictions for the movement of wood and plant material from properties in the QA.

DPIRD (Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development) is conducting trapping and surveillance to determine the spread of the pest. Traps are at various locations including the Shire’s two tip sites.
