Become a citizen scientist and participate in the biggest bioblitz across the Southern Hemisphere! The Great Southern BioBlitz in the western Avon Wheatbelt includes the Shires of Northam. A bioblitz is an intense, short-term event where teams of scientists, naturalists, and citizen scientists work together to find and identify as many different species as possible in a specific area, typically over a few day. These events aim to document the biodiversity of a location, generate valuable scientific data, and engage the public in conservation efforts.
✿ Learn and build identification skills
✿ Connect with community and nature
✿ Discover hidden and rare species
✿ Contribute to real scientific data We are so excited that the Shire of Northam is now included in the Great Southern Bioblitz!
To contribute to the Great Southern Bioblitz event and to biodiversity and conservation data for Northam, all you need to do is:
- Download the iNaturalist application to your handheld device or make an account on your computer.
- Take photos of species in Northam's great outdoors between October 24th-27th.
- Upload your photos and obervations to iNaturalist by the 10th of November 2025. Don't worry if you cant identify the organism.
Just make sure you get some good clear photos or sounds. This is one project in the Great Southern Bioblitz 2025 international citizen science event where communities across the Southern Hemisphere record as much biodiversity as possible during spring using photos uploaded to the iNaturalist phone app or website.
This year, #GSB25 will run from 24–27 October 2025.
