2024 Citizen Of The Year Nominations Are Open!

Each year the Community Citizen of the Year Awards allow us to recognise individuals and organisations who have made notable contribution within the Shire of Northam. It is these people who help make the Shire of Northam such a great place to live and visit.

Nominations can be made for contributions to education, health, fundraising, voluntary services, business, sports, arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances the well being of the community.

There are four award categories:
• Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals over 16 years)
• Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years)
• Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years or over)
• Active Citizenship Award (for community groups or events)

2023 Winners:

Citizen of the Year: Lisa Giorgi

If there's a community event or group that needs to be organised Lisa is always on hand to help out. She has been an active member of the Bakers Hill Progress Association for many years.
   
Lisa has helped out with the after hours school care, she plays on the local ladies cricket and netball team and in the tennis club. She's a valuable asset to our little town. Her many years of community service deserve some recognition.
   
Lisa is inclusive, she doesn't care if you're young or old, new to town or what your background is, she supports all community groups equally, including the playgroup and the local craft group. Lisa is humble and modest and works quietly in the background to make our town a beautiful place.

   

Elaine Pollard

Senior Citizen of the Year: Elaine Pollard

Elaine volunteered with the Brownies as a Brown Owl. She has been volunteering with the Saint James Anglican Guild for decades only ending when the hall was removed and she continued for a short period of time in an amalgamated committee with St. John’s Guild when St. James Guild folded.
  
She has been working as a volunteer with the Anglican Church and was a founding volunteer with the Mainly Music Children program. Elaine worked delivering Meals on Wheels within the community and is a life long volunteer who has dedicated her free time to providing services with in the Northam community.

Joshua Patrick

Youth Citizen of the Year: Joshua Patrick

Joshua does more for his family and community than many people twice his age. He has 3 younger sisters that he helps with. The second of these, Charlotte who has multiple disabilities.He has been an active carer for Charlotte since the age of 6, supporting his mother.
   
He is a proud member of the Army Cadets. He is a Corporal and has just qualified as a Signalling Maintenance Engineer (SME). This allows him to be an influence on other young people with his words, his actions and his lifestyle.
     
Josh is also a supporter of Young Carers nationally and facilitates zoom meetings with them. He is also a state representative for SWAN (Syndrome without a name) Siblings.
     
Josh was also invited to talk at TedX Kings Park, where he was the first speaker and also the youngest. He managed this with his usual charm, humour, wit, and maturity.

Active Citizenship Group/Event: Turn Up In Blue

TUIB Day is coordinated by various local service providers in Northam and service providers who provide place-based or outreach support to Northam.

TUIB Day provides individuals with an opportunity to connect with local service providers in a fun and safe environment while participating in interactive activities promoting positive mental health and wellbeing, individual, family safety and harm minimisation strategies.

All community members are welcome to come down and have a chat or just enjoy the 30+ interactive activities, live music, entertainment and free BBQ lunch.
