At an event held in Clackline on Thursday 10th April, two candidates for the Federal seat of Bullwinkel, Mia Davies from the National Party and Matt Moran from the Liberal Party, made an election commitment of $200,000 towards an advocacy item listed in the Shire of Northam’s Priorities for the Future.
There are significant works needed across many heritage trails within the Shire of Northam, including a ten-kilometre section at Clackline. The election commitment would contribute towards the upgrades needed along the Clackline Heritage Trail.
The section in need of repair is along the Railway Heritage line, which was raised by the Clackline Progress Association and further supported by the Shire of Northam for inclusion in the Northam localised Tracks and Trails Masterplan. The trail links to the existing Clackline trail included in the plan.
Once an important junction for the Eastern Railway lines to Northam and Toodyay, Clackline’s rail history is now showcased with the exceptionally maintained railway carriage which acts as the local post office and can be seen from the Great Eastern Highway.
Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said, “In recent years, the Shire of Northam and Clackline Progress Association have invested significant time and funds into developing Clackline’s Rail Heritage assets, which will be enhanced by the upgrades intended for the Railway Heritage line.”
This project aligns an action in the Shire of Northam’s Council Plan: Provide improved tracks and trails and the election commitment is a welcome announcement.
