President’s Message

On behalf of the Shire of Northam I would like to wish the community a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Christmas is a wonderful time to share with family and friends but it is also a time to take great care, particularly on our roads. Please pay extra attention whilst driving on our roads.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank and acknowledge the work of our many volunteers and volunteer organisations. Of particular note this time of the year are our Bushfire Volunteers – I can say to all the volunteers that the community values your contribution and thanks you for your commitment.

Hopefully by now many of you would have noted that the ‘former Fitzgerald Hotel site’ has recently received a ‘facelift’ with new lawn being installed. The owner of the property Mr Stan Malinowski has accessed the Shire of Northam CBD Enhancement Fund to assist fund this work. I am of the view it is a great short term outcome for this area and congratulate Mr Malinowski on his commitment to this work.

Whilst I am on the topic of CBD enhancements, the Shire of Northam Pop Up Shop concept is also coming to fruition. Council has leased the former Roediger Butcher Shop with the view of sub leasing this to business opportunities. We have already attracted SciTech, who will be in the shop mid-January, which will be great for families and hopefully provide a flow on to the business community with more people coming into the CBD.

I was pleased to attend a community forum at the Wundowie Community. The forum is part of the Council commitment to improving its communication with the Community. We received some very good feedback as well as some insights into the particular challenges and concerns of the Wundowie Community.

Shire of Northam Photography Competition

Photographer Richard Waldendorp has judged the Shire of Northam Photography Competition and the winning photo was taken by Warren Cummins.

The aim of the Photo competition was to expand our photo library to attract tourists here. There were over 70 entries altogether and we have some lovely photos to use to promote our beautiful part of the world.
