Waste Management Facilities
The Shire of Northam operates two Class II Waste Management Facilities - the Old Quarry Road Waste Management Facility near Northam in Northam (off Northam-Toodyay Road) and the Inkpen Road Waste Management Facility in Copley, (Wundowie). Both of the facilities operate as EFTPOS only sites.

Old Quarry Road Transfer Station
Residents using the Old Quarry Road Waste Management Facility will no longer deliver to the Tip face / Landfill Area. Instead, they will be required to separate their waste upon its disposal and will be assisted to do so by the Transfer Station Attendants.
The Waste Transfer Station has designated drop-off areas for the following accepted waste & recyclable products:
- General waste
- Green waste
- Scrap metal
- Items suitable for the Re-Store shop
- Waste oil
- Fluorescent tubes and globes
- Batteries
- Mobile phones & E-waste
- Gas bottles
- Bulk recycling (eg. cardboard)
- Mattresses (fees apply)
- Tyres (fees apply)
Northam Re-Store "Re-Duce, Re-Use, Re-Cycle"
The Northam Re-Store was opened on the 1st August 2022 ad takes used goods that would normally end up on the landfill, and gives them a new home!
Items that can be donated include:

- Garden items
- Bric-a-brac
- Tools
- Building materials
- Bikes
- Toys
- Books
- and lots, lots more ....

Tip Passes
Tip Passes are available from the gatehouse entrance of both Waste Management Facilities. Proof of property ownership and identification is required to obtain an annual pass, which runs on the rates year.
The tip pass allows residents 10 free general domestic waste disposals and unlimited clean green waste disposals per year. Cars, utilities, vans and trailers bringing waste into the sites must not exceed 1.8 m x 1.2 m x 0.6 m. All loads greater in size will incur the standard waste disposal fees.
Please note costs will apply for the disposal of some wastes including asbestos, tyres, more than 30L of waste oil, animal bodies, commercial waste, and residential waste loads exceeding 1.8 m x 1.2 m x 0.6 m.
All wastes that have a charge associated with their disposal must be paid for at the gatehouse as per the Shire's adopted Fees & Charges.
Commercial Waste
All commercial waste brought to the Shire's Waste Management Facilities are subject to Shire's adopted fees and charges. Please note all waste transported from the Perth Metropolitan Regional Scheme (MRS) area and delivered to the Old Quarry Road Waste Management Facility is subject to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Metropolitan Levy in additional, to the Shire's fees and charges.
No metropolitan wastes are accepted at the Inkpen Road Waste Management Facility.
Asbestos
Waste containing asbestos can be accepted at both waste management facilities, subject to the following conditions:
- All Asbestos Waste must be declared to staff on entry to the premises.
- All Asbestos Waste must be double wrapped in a minimum 0.2mm HDPE plastic sheeting/bagging and taped securely and labelled Caution Asbestos in writing no less than 50mm high.
- Incorrectly wrapped and labelled Asbestos Waste Material will not be accepted at the premises.
- Asbestos loads from the metropolitan area must be photographed and photographs must include the registration plate of the vehicle delivering the load as per the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation's requirements.
- All Asbestos Waste must be kept separate from general waste and disposed of only in the designed asbestos disposal area.
- Prior arrangement must be made with the Shire's Waste Services for disposal of large commercial loads.
- Fees for the disposal of asbestos will be charged as per the Shire's adopted Fees and Charges.
Liquid Waste Disposal
The Shire of Northam operates a licensed liquid waste facility as part of the Old Quarry Road Waste Management facility for disposal of local septage wastes from leach drains and grease traps.
This facility is licensed by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and strict conditions regulate the types and amount of liquid waste that can be accepted.
Access to the facility is with prior Shire approval only for licensed controlled waste contractors. Approval will only be granted for the disposal of local liquid wastes and if capacity is available.

Recycling
The Shire of Northam offers a range of free recycling options at both The Old Quarry Transfer Station and the Inkpen Waste Management Facility.
Mixed Recyclables
Plastic and glass bottles/ jars, paper, newspapers, glossy magazines, telephone books, envelopes, aluminium and steel cans, tins, clean foil, liquid paperboard, milk, juice and laundry detergent cartons (not silver-lined).
Cardboard
Scrap Metal
Scrap steel, including fridges, freezers, ovens, washing machines, microwaves, fans, wire, light gauge steel, metal guttering, alloys and car bodies.
Car, Truck & Motorbike Batteries
Clean Fill
Clean fill is accepted free of charge at both our Old Quarry Road and Inkpen Road Waste Management Facilities.
The Shire of Northam is always looking for clean fill for use within its landfill facilities.
Clean fill is sand or soil with some additional extraneous material. If you are not sure whether your material qualifies, we encourage you to contact the Old Quarry Waste Management Facility on 9621 1795, visit the Inkpen Road Facility, or contact the Shire of Northam’s Waste Management Officer on 9622 6100.
Waste Oil
Waste Oil Domestic only less than <30L. You must pour your own waste oil into the Waste Oil Facility and either take your plastic container home with you or dispose of it in the bins provided adjacent.
E-Waste (only available at Old Quarry Waste Facility)
TVs, Computers, Laptops, Hard Drives, Monitors, Printers, Scanners, Faxes, Photocopiers, Speakers, Keyboards, Mice, Joysticks, Mobile Phones, i-Pods, UPS Systems, CD & Floppy Drives, Electronic Cables & Wiring, Circuit Boards & Plotters.
Waste Tyres
Various sizes (see Shire’s Fees and Charges above).
Printer Cartridges (only available at Old Quarry Waste Facility)
Printer cartridges from Brother, Canon, Cartridge World, Dell, Epson, HP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark, Roland, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba can be recycled at the Reycling Station in the foyer of the Shire Administration Office. Please remove all packaging and deliver your printer cartridge in a plastic bag, as cardboard and foam packaging is not accepted. Please also only deliver cartridges from the above participating companies as other cartridges are not processed.

DrumMUSTER (only available at Old Quarry Waste Facility)
The DrumMuster facility at the Old Quarry Road Waste Management Facility is a permanent facility and drums can be dropped off at any time during normal opening hours. No appointment needed.
DrumMuster is a program that recycles clean and dry drums from growers, farmers and other chemical users throughout the country.
Containers must be triple rinsed or cleaned with high pressure and left to dry with their lids removed. Any drums which have residue still present, inside or out, will be rejected. All drums must display the DrumMuster logo somewhere on the body of the container.
The drums are collected and crushed or shredded and transformed into practical items such as plastic cable covers, wheelie bins and irrigation pipes.
