Holyoake - Light the Night

Published on Monday, 1 September 2025 at 12:00:00 AM

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is held annually on the 10 September.  Every year on WSPD, communities, organisations, and governments across Australia and around the world come together – it is a time to reflect, connect, and recommit to our shared goal of preventing suicide and spreading hope.

This year, Holyoake is courageously leading a regional and statewide online ‘call to action’. We are encouraging and empowering individuals, families, schools, businesses, sporting, and community spaces across the Wheatbelt and the entirety of WA, to stand together in hope and connection to ‘LIGHT THE NIGHT’.

Get involved:

  • From 7:00 pm, light a candle, turn on a light in the front room of your home or shop front or place fairy lights in your driveway or at the front of your house / business.
  • Take a photo of your light(s) and share it on social media using #lightthenightwspd.
  • Email your photo to Holyoake’s Wheatbelt Suicide Prevention Team ([email protected]) to be part of a ‘Collective Photo Collage’ which will then be showcased further on social media platforms.

A Call to Action for the Health and Social Services Sector:

Your organisations are at the heart of supporting people through distress, recovery, and healing. By joining #lightthenightwspd, you can demonstrate the power of our sector when we collaborate – standing not only as service providers, but as partners in hope, action, and connection for our communities.

A Call to Action for Schools:

Schools, groups, and workplaces are encouraged to create Hope Light Lanterns (using jars, LED candles, or craft supplies). These lanterns can then be proudly displayed on WSPD and then at future mental health and wellbeing events across the Wheatbelt or State.

A Call to Action for Community Resource Centres & Local Government Authorities:

CRC’s and LGA’s are encouraged to light a local landmark in yellow/orange to LIGHT THE NIGHT within their community.

LIGHT THE NIGHT:

  • Is accessible for everyone: simple, meaningful, and inclusive across ages, cultures, and beliefs.
  • Showcases strength in numbers: the more lights we see, the stronger the message of connection becomes.
  • Becomes a symbol of change: shifting our communities from silence and stigma to openness, empathy, and action.

Let’s make our region and our state glow with the message: You matter. You belong. You are not alone.
