The Shire of Northam is committed to facilitating the inclusion of people with disabilities through developing and improving its access to services, facilities, programs and events. The whole community benefits from improved access and our commitment is to administer best practice principles through the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan to continually develop accessibility to a high standard.

Council values your feedback as a community member or visitor, as your experiences in the use of Council facilities, attendance at functions and events are paramount to the ongoing improvement of services, buildings and facilities within our Shire.

Support for people with disabilities
The Disability Services Commission is a government service which employs Local Area Coordinators to assist people with disabilities to plan, organise and access supports and services which enhance their participation in and contribution to their local community.
‘Count Me In’ is a long term government strategy of the WA Disability Services Commission to guide all Western Australians when responding to people with disability. Count Me In has a vision that ‘All people live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone’

Independent living support
Killara is an adult day care and respite centre proudly sponsored by the Shire of Northam and funded by the Home and Community Care Program (HACC) and the National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP).
Killara provides flexible centre based day care, respite and social support services for aged and disabled (over the age of 18) people and their carers. Services are provided so these people may remain living in the community. View more information about Killara Adult Day Care Centre.

Rights for people with disabilities
The Australian Human Rights Commission leads the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to stop disability discrimination. The act promotes equal rights and opportunity and access for people with disabilities.
