Fire Bans

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) declares Total Fire Bans in Western Australia.

There has been recent changes to the Bush Fires Regulations 1954 to allow exceptions for prescribed activities operating within prescribed conditions.

Harvest and Vehicle Movement and Hot Works Bans

Pursuant to Regulation 38A, a Harvest, Vehicle Movement & Hotworks Ban (HVMB) may be called at any time during the Prohibited & Restricted Burning Periods.

A HVMB affects all residents within the Shire of Northam, not just farmers so it is important that al members of the community understand the restrictions and how it may affect them.

ACTIVITIES NOT PERMITTED DURING THE PERIOD OF A BAN.

  • Harvesting operations are not permitted,
  • The use of vehicles in paddocks is not permitted unless using a diesel vehicle for the purpose of watering and tending of livestock
  • The use or operation of any engine, vehicle, including motorbikes/quad bikes, plant, equipment or machinery including lawnmowers in the area likely to cause a bush fire or contribute to the spread of a bushfire
  • Any “hot works” (e.g. welding, grinding, cutting, heating etc) in the “open air” are not permitted,

A Harvest Vehicle Movement and Hot works Ban will be advertised on the Shire of Northam Website & Social Media pages.

Where possible on ABC Radio 531AM, Radio West 864 AM.

The new notification service will enable residents to be directly informed about changes to:

  • Burning periods;
  • Total Fire Bans;
  • Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans;
  • Cancellation of burning permits;
  • Other fire information all year round

Emergency alerts will be sent from the Emergency Broadcast Network to notify people in affected areas by SMS/landline. Do not rely on the Shire's Bush Fire Safety Information SMS notification in the event of a bush fire emergency. Leaving early is the safest option.

Please note: you no longer have to register to receive notifications from the Emergency Broadcast Network.
