CEO COVID-19 Update March 2022

Published on Friday, 11 March 2022 at 4:44:42 PM

Like everyone in our community and across Western Australia, the Shire of Northam is working to address a range of challenges as a result of COVID-19.

General

We are aware that COVID-19 is currently in our community and as such it is important to protect yourself, your family, colleagues, and the wider community from COVID-19. We strongly encourage you keep yourself informed and check https://www.wa.gov.au/government/COVID-19-coronavirus for the latest information from the WA Government.

It is necessary to follow the guidelines, however it is also important for you to stay connected with your friends, family and the general community. Different segments of our community will be challenged in different ways; we know our small business community for example are struggling – particularly in the hospitality area. So please support them. If you take the necessary precautions and follow the WA Health guidelines there is no reason you cannot go out for a meal, grab a coffee, or do some shopping.  Please remember that our local servicepeople are still showing up for work, in these uncertain times, to keep Northam going- please try to be kind in your dealings with them.

On March 2 2022, stage 2 restrictions were put in place by the WA Government. This includes:

  • The requirement to wear masks being expanded to children in Years 3-6 in all public indoor settings (usual exemptions apply)
  • Home gatherings limited to a total of 10 people indoors and outdoors (except weddings and funerals)
  • Private outdoor gatherings in a public space limited to 50 people (2sqm square metre rule)
  • 150 person capacity limit indoors or outdoors for weddings and funerals, and for places of worship
  • No more than 10 people inside if held at a private residence

Shire of Northam Services update

As the number of cases in Northam and WA generally is increasing daily, it is important that you check regularly for exposure sites and follow the government guidelines as listed. These can be checked on the HealthyWA website.

The Shire of Northam has recently made the decision to limit access to our administration facility, to be service by appointment only. We understand that this is not ideal, however it is a necessary action to position us to continue essential services without interruption. Like many organisations our staff are being impacted by COVID-19 (either directly or indirectly – e.g. having to stay home with sick children as they are unable to attend school).

This will be a temporary measure, however at this stage we have not put a date on when we will return to normal operations. As soon as we are able to resume normal operations, we will inform the community as a matter of priority.

It is important to us that our community are still able to access the customer service they need, so we encourage you to contact us on any of the below channels during this period of disruption:

The Council held its February Council forum meeting online on Wednesday 10th March 2022. The forum meeting is an opportunity for Councillors to ask questions of staff on items to be decided at the Full Council meeting, which is to be held on 16th March at 5.30pm. The aim is to hold this meeting in person at the Northam Recreation Centre (Hospitality Room). The agenda for the meeting, along with notes from the forum are available here.
