There is something for everyone this Australia Day in the Shire of Northam as we come together as a community to reflect and respect what it means to be Australian.

Activities to get involved in include free family fun at the Northam and Wundowie aquatic centers, community breakfasts and BBQ lunches, a movie night on the oval and a special stargazing event featuring Aboriginal astronomy.

Head to the Shire of Northam website for more details about individual events, and see below for a snapshot of what’s on.

Wundowie

Getting in early the Wundowie Progress Association invites all to celebrate Australia Day on Wednesday evening the 25th of January at the Wundowie Hockey Oval from 6.30pm. Come along for a free sausage sizzle and musical entertainment by Chris Gibbs Band.

On Australia Day morning Thursday January 26, if you like getting up early, there are a number of free local breakfasts being hosted around the Shire.

Spencers Brook

The Spencers Brook Progress Association is hosting a free Australia Day Breakfast at the Station Masters House from 7am.

Bakers Hill

The Bakers Hill Progress Association invites everyone to their free Australia Day ‘Breakfast with Bubbles’ from 8am at the Bakers Hill Recreation Centre. One complimentary drink with breakfast per person.

Northam

In the town of Northam, we kick off with the Citizenship Ceremony at Bilya Koort Boodja at 10am, where we honour being a part of a diverse and multicultural nation. The Community Citizen of the Year Award winners will be announced, followed by a community morning tea.

Enjoy some family fun for the rest of the day at the Northam aquatic facility which will be open from 10am, with free entry including slide entry from 12pm.

The Wundowie pool will also be open with free entry from 12pm with games, entertainment and BBQ facilities.

Then at 6pm bring the family along to finish the day with a movie night at Henry Street Oval to watch Minions: Rise of Gru. Free pizza and ice cream provided, just remember to bring your own picnic chair and rugs.

Then, for those not interested in watching the Minion take over the world, there is a special stargazing event being held at Bernard Park from 7pm. Starting with an Astro Tourism presentation at Bilya Koort Boodja we will then move outside to discover Aboriginal themed astronomy in the night sky. Free Aboriginal themed picnic boxes to the first 100 RSVPs – get in quick!
